What to Expect at Your
First Appointment

No surprises. Here's exactly how the first visit works — from booking to quote to getting started.

Step 1 — Getting in Touch
How to book
1

Three ways to reach us

You can get in touch by phone or text at (540) 339-7667, through the contact form on this site, or by email at groutguyva@gmail.com. There's no wrong way — use whatever's easiest for you. That said, if you reach out by email or form, expect a slight delay compared to a call or text. Phone and text get the fastest response.

2

What to have ready when you reach out

The more detail you can provide upfront, the more accurate the initial estimate. Here's what's most useful:

  • Address where the service will be performed
  • Estimated square footage of the area
  • Description of the issues — what you're seeing, what's concerning you
  • Your expectations — what a good outcome looks like to you
  • Photos — feel free to text them directly. A picture saves a lot of back-and-forth and allows for a more accurate initial estimate without requiring an on-site visit first.

With square footage and photos, an initial estimate can often be provided before ever visiting the site.

3

Response time

The goal is to respond within 24 hours — sometimes it's faster, and occasionally it stretches to 48. If you haven't heard back within two days, feel free to follow up. No one slips through intentionally, but it does happen.

4

Scheduling lead time

Currently booking 1 to 2 weeks out depending on the scope of the job, the severity of the issues, and finding a date that works for both sides. More complex jobs that require longer installation windows may push toward the outer end of that range. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when we respond — no stringing anyone along.

📍 Outside the Roanoke area?

For jobs outside the immediate Roanoke area, we prefer to start with a phone estimate before committing to an on-site visit — just to make sure it makes sense for both sides. Once on-site, the estimate may be revised based on what we can actually see. Photos and square footage help a lot upfront, but there are things that only show up in person — hidden water damage, substrate issues, or conditions that change the scope. Any adjustments will always be explained clearly before work begins.

Step 2 — The First Visit
What happens when we arrive
1

Introductions first — then the work

The first thing that happens isn't an inspection — it's a conversation. MJ will introduce himself, take a minute to get to know you, and answer any questions you have before touching anything. Once you're comfortable, he'll move to the problem areas to assess what's going on. Color samples are brought on every visit. Generally no testing tools are needed — most of what matters is visible. Measurements are taken if we decide to move forward with an estimate.

2

Honest assessment — not a sales pitch

The assessment is about understanding what the area actually needs — not finding ways to add scope. MJ inspects the work area, determines the appropriate next steps, and gives you a straight answer on what's realistic. The goal is always based on what you need, not on upselling. If something isn't required, it won't be recommended. If something looks worse than initially expected, that'll be said clearly — before any work begins.

3

Color samples — and a tip if you're doing a same-day install

A color chart is brought on every visit. The full Mapei color guide is also available on this site, and Mapei publishes color charts online as well — so you can browse before the visit. If you're planning a same-day installation, it's highly recommended to know your color choice ahead of time. Arriving without a color picked can delay the job. If you're unsure, the chart is there to help — but the more decided you are going in, the smoother the day goes.

4

How long does the estimate visit take?

Most estimate visits take 20–30 minutes. The goal is to see the surface, understand what's actually needed, and give you a straight answer on the spot. For more complex situations — water damage, full shower rebuilds — it may take a little longer to assess properly. Either way, we won't take up more of your time than necessary.

Step 3 — The Quote
How pricing works
1

Do you quote on the spot or send it later?

The estimate is written up after the on-site assessment and sent to your phone or email — not verbal, not hand-written on a clipboard. MJ steps to his vehicle, puts it together on his onboard computer, and delivers it digitally so you have a record of exactly what was quoted. We can review it together before you decide anything.

2

Deposit & payment

No deposit is required for most jobs. For installations exceeding $1,000, a 10% deposit is required to hold the booking. Payment in full is collected once the job is complete and you've reviewed the work — not before. We accept most forms of payment.

3

Quote validity

Quotes are based on current material costs and the scope as assessed at the time of the visit. If significant time passes or conditions change before work begins, a quote may need to be revised — but that would always be communicated clearly before anything moves forward.

Before We Arrive
What to have ready
A few simple things that make the visit go smoothly.
Do I need to clean the area before you arrive?
No deep cleaning needed — we assess the surface as it normally is. If we can see the actual condition of the grout and tile, we can give you a more accurate assessment and quote.
Do I need to be home during the job?
Yes — someone 18 or older must be present in the home at all times during the installation. We will never enter a home without someone present, and work will not be signed off as complete without a physical walkthrough and sign-off from you. This is a firm policy, not a preference — it exists to protect both you and us. If circumstances change on the day of the job, please reach out as early as possible to reschedule.
Should I do anything to prepare the bathroom?
It helps to clear personal items — products, bottles, accessories — off ledges and out of the shower or work area before we arrive. Move rugs or anything on the floor near the work zone. Beyond that, no major prep is needed. The less we have to work around, the faster we can get started.
What about pets?
We use natural mold treatments and no harsh chemicals — so pets don't need to be boarded or removed from the home. During active steam cleaning it's best to keep them out of the immediate work area, but that's a brief window.
How long before I can use the shower after work is done?
Most grout jobs are a two-visit process. The installation itself typically takes a full day — we'd rather take our time and get it right than rush to finish. Sealing happens on a second visit, usually the following day, once the grout has had its full 24-hour cure per Mapei's specifications. That follow-up visit is quick — typically under an hour. It does require you to be available for a second visit, but we try to make it as convenient as possible. The upside is that the sealer bonds properly to fully cured grout, which means it actually lasts — rather than being applied too soon and failing early.

Ready to get started?

Reach out and we'll get back to you — usually same day.
